Call for Proposals for Summer Seminar 2009

The Atlas Society is currently planning its 20th annual Summer Seminar for early July, 2009 at a location to be determined in the Eastern or Midwestern USA. Likely dates are June 28–July 5. We expect to have the site and dates decided no later than December 1, 2008.

To create the program for the Seminar, we are soliciting proposals for lectures, courses, workshops, artistic performances, exhibits and other program elements. This document contains general information about the Seminar, descriptions of the categories of material we are interested in seeing presented, and guidelines for proposals.

Download the full call for proposals now! Proposals are due by November 23, 2008.

General Information about the Summer Seminar

The Seminar is a weeklong conference for people interested in Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism, combining education, recreation, and social opportunities. The primary features of each day’s schedule are lecture, performance, and workshop sessions. It features 25 or so speakers and around 50 sessions (typically 75 minutes each). The audience, normally between 120 and 200 people, is diverse in background, interests, and level of knowledge. It includes college and graduate students, professional and business people, retirees, and professional scholars. Because of the size and diversity of the audience, TAS is seeking an equally diverse program, with presentations that vary in subject matter, format, and level. Information about past Summer Seminars, including program and schedule, may be found here.

Summer Seminar proposals will be selected on the basis of their intellectual merit, appeal to the expected audience, and fit with the overall program. We are particularly interested in speakers who can offer two or more talks or offer a mini-course covering two or more sessions. Speakers are typically compensated with a tuition waiver for the Summer Seminar and a modest honorarium. In some cases, travel funds and room and board at the Seminar are also provided.

We are looking for presentations and mini-courses that cover topics in the areas of Philosophy, Politics and Culture, Applied Objectivism, and Arts and Aesthetics. For more on these topic areas and full proposal guidelines, download the full call for proposals now.

The deadline for proposals is November 23, 2008.
