The New Individualist, Bidinotto, Win Major National Magazine Award

The New Individualist has won one of Folio magazine's prestigious "Eddie" Awards, for excellence in editorial content. Folio-1.JPG

Our magazine previously had been named in mid-September as one of the three finalists in the category of “Best Single Article” in an association or nonprofit publication issued six or more times per year. At an awards ceremony in Manhattan, Folio, the trade journal of magazine management, presented TNI editor-in-chief Robert James Bidinotto the first-place gold "Eddie" Award for his March 2007 article “Up from Conservatism.” The article critically surveys the ideas and personalities of the contemporary conservative movement, probing the reasons for the movement’s disarray and decline.

This year’s Folio finalists were selected by a panel of more than 100 judges—including respected editors, publishers, creative directors and webmasters—from a pool of roughly 3,000 entries submitted by magazine publishers spanning the globe. Other 2007 gold award winners included National Geographic, Fast Company, Billboard, Glamour and Harvard Business Review. Those taking home silver and bronze awards included Forbes and Newsweek.

The award winners were announced at a gala banquet on Sunday, September 23 at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. The Atlas Society, the D.C.-based center for Objectivism that publishes The New Individualist, hosted a table at the event that brought industry leaders to a packed ballroom.

Attending the awards show were Robert Bidinotto and his wife Cynthia; managing editor Sherrie Gossett; Atlas Society executive director Edward Hudgins; Atlas founding trustee Walter Donway, who was the founding editor of the journal Cerebrum; author Anne Heller; literary agent Linda Konner; and well-wishers Phil Bowers, James Kourlas, and Charles Slepian.

Bidinotto said, “The New Individualist is proud to be honored for editorial excellence by the distinguished Folio awards program. Our magazine challenges the cultural left and the cultural right with a philosophy of principled individualism. ‘Up from Conservatism’ embodies that unique perspective, and I’m gratified to receive this important industry recognition on behalf of the publication.”

Trustee Donway observed that this award "represents an entirely outside, third-party judgment of the quality of the Society's work. Because we won top honors in one of the few categories representing excellence in intellectual content, and the impact of the content from a media point of view, this win is especially welcomed."

Executive director Hudgins added, "We know that our ideas are right and powerful. With The New Individualist we aim to bring those ideas to a wider audience in an interesting, engaging, and compelling manner. I congratulate Robert and Sherrie for doing just that. Now we will push ahead for the resources necessary to place our award-winning magazine on major newsstands and in libraries, to increase our subscription base, and to make The New Individualist a publication to be reckoned with in the war of ideas."

Following the awards ceremony, a champagne reception was held for the winners to toast sweet victory!
